Task 7 – Text and Image

Brief

Design and create a dynamic piece of multimodal communication that embodies the central subject and the essence of your essay text/s in a visual form for a series of spreads for a magazine or book. Consider your particular stance or point of view of your argument and the manipulation of text and image.

Explore the formal and conceptual ways in which the relationship between text and image create meaning (and the ability to transfer meaning between your intention as a creator to the intended audience. Pay particular attention to the issues of denotation and connotation, anchorage and relay discussed in our lecture.

If appropriate, utilise compelling imagery that can be ‘found’ or self-generated and use words that anchor or fix to mean to the composition/s. Alternatively, utilize some words that act as a third sign to control the way we read the semiotic relationship.

Utilise a grid from an existing magazine /book layout composition or design your own from a grid structure. Prepare roughs on how the meaning of a /text/s and imagery can be modified by its juxtaposition in a page/s or a unified composition.

Explore different ways words can modify readings of the imagery. The nature of the work is that it should reflect your conceptual understanding of the image/ text relationship, and it is your expression of this that is fundamental.

Formal elements and conceptual elements to consider in your work:

The use of typographic space and the use of grids and other compositional structures to combine imagery and text.

The manipulation of the formal qualities of type words as images.

The use of imagery to stand for words — pictures as concepts.

Type classification, type specification, weight and interline spacing.

Constructing a visual argument, design & production

What is the potential editorial context?

You may consider the use of analogue and digital or a combination of both.

The nature of the form of this will dictate the approach you adopt, but you will necessarily have to address the theoretical and practical/logistical issues as they relate to your work and its production.

The development of your subject in a visual form and your individual practice is central to this project. You will need to consider the manner and form of your outcome, its context, and audience for your work.

Prepare roughs on how the meaning of a /text/s and imagery can be modified by its juxtaposition in a page/s or a unified composition of your choice.

Explore different ways words can modify readings of the imagery.

Audience
Consider the nature of what it is that you are trying to communicate. This will in general terms determine but not necessarily dictate the detail of the approach you take.

Designs

Magazine Designs

I started by designing out various structures for the magazine. I looked at particular words that I could use when designing the magazine, for example, I used the word DPRK, as it represents the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I was looking at different ways of displaying images in an interesting way, that the viewer will think of it a different perspective on the original image.

I was looking at how I could use text to display a deeper meaning other that the words are written on the page, for example, the viewer can create a story between the way the text is displayed rather than what is written down on the page.

Research

I had done some research advertising, as I felt this could give me a better view on how I should layout my work in an interesting yet readable way.

I looked at this book, as it gave me more of an insight into what sort of designs I could achieve using text and image. I looked at these particular pages, as it displayed text and image in an interesting way, as this is what I wanted to display in my designs.

InDesign

I wanted to incorporate the text from my essay to my front page design. I had seen this image in the Barbican Centre in London; I thought the image will go well with my idea of incorporated the idea of text and image combining together to a create a deeper meaning.

I used the shape of triangle upside down, as it gives the view of three point perspective, which I had talked about my in my essay, and I thought this would be best while trying to emulate building in an interesting way. I wanted to minimise the view of the image, as this was fitted in with being trapped and confined, which many North Korean’s feels.

Designs – Front Cover

I looked at confining the red rectangle in the top left-hand corner of the page, as it could run to the back of the magazine cover. I used the a propaganda poster, in which the Korean women is pointing, and this can come across as aggressive, hence the red rectangle being confined in the corner of the page.

I used an opacity of 50% so, therefore, the picture was still visible, but not the main object of photography. I chose the typeface ‘Steelfish’ as the typeface itself is straight and military like, and I felt this best represented the Korean government.

Magazine Design

I looked at incorporated the National Korean colours in my designs, as I wanted to patriotic to North Korean’s. For the double page spread, I used a poster a person looking through a telescope, as this poster represented improving the nation’s economy, and it best suited the text extract I was using.

I decided to make the 60% large, as it was pivotal information on how the economy was improving with the use of technology. I used various shades of colours to emulate increase and decrease, I also used the positioning of the text to affect this.

For the second double page spread, I used a red rectangle which had effect of overlay to give the impression of screen printing, as I talked about North Korean Propaganda posters using screen printing as a method to achieve their posters.

Final Design

Front Cover

I used the propaganda poster, of which the Korean Women is pointing at the person. I used this picture, as I felt that it best represented the Nation of Korea, of telling everyone what to do. I mirrored the image to give a bigger impact to the viewer, I also cropped the image, to bring more emphasis to the finger that is pointing. I added what DRPR stands for, to give more clarification to the viewer.

I added a white border around the image to provoke the emotion of being confined, as I mentioned this theme a lot in my essay.

Edited Photo

I edited the original image to a black and white photography, I also removed the text from the image, so, therefore the image was more in line with whole design format of the magazine that I set for myself. I wanted the red background to stand out more on the page as it gave definition and dimension to the page.

Double Page Spread

For this double page spread, I used a propaganda poster, in which I edited the same way as the Korean Women pointing. I wanted the red typeface to stand out on the page, as it is the hooking text. I made the text in separate text boxes, as I wanted to have more control on where they would be places and how they would be placed. I decided to make the 60% look as if they are failing, as the body talks about how North Korea 60% of the population owned a mobile phone, but then got banned, hence the failing percentages. The title text has an effect of multiple, so, therefore, it was somewhat transparent, and the background was visible.

2nd Double Page Spread

For this double page spread, I used a propaganda poster, in which I edited the same way as the Korean Women pointing. I wanted the red typeface to stand out on the page, as it is the hooking text. For the main text, I made the main words bigger than all the other texts, as I wanted it to stand out against the other words, as it is a powerful word, that can evoke a lot of emotions. The body text is justified. I have used the same typeface for all text on each design, as this give the designs consistency with each other. The title text has an effect of multiple, so, therefore, it was somewhat transparent, and the background was visible. For the design I added a triangle which runs from the top to the bottom, the triangle itself corresponds with the other double spreads triangle, as it the bottom on the triangles lines up with the other bottom of the triangle

3rd Double Spread

I used this poster for my image, as it very powerful, as it is depitcing many different people, but are all doing the same pose.

For the typeface, I decided to make the ‘First’ bigger than ‘Military’ as there is a heavy emphasis on how everything with the Korean Government should come first in all aspects of life; and I wanted to show this in the way the text is positioned on the page. I made a subheading underneath the title to give more of an insight into what the title means.

Improvement

I had made some improvements from the previous spreads, from the feedback I had received. I changed the body text, as it was easier to read than before, as people found it diffcult to read.
